Today we woke up early again and headed to the Borghese Gardens. We got a little confused as we were going there, but we finally found it. We had tickets as well to go to the Museo e Borghese, so we had a little bit of time to kill until we had to be at the museum. We decided to walk around the garden and it was beautiful! We got to see gorgeous flowers, land, and trees. There were some men playing instruments like the accordion and that were so talented! So we enjoyed that for a little while! Then we got to see where they used to perform Shakespeare plays, an old horse track, and fountains. Then it was time to go to the
museum. Tiffany and I decided it was worth it to split a guide, so we walked around really close so we could both hear! :) It was such a good idea to get it though because we learned so much more and could understand the art better. So many of the paintings were Christian based and had some spiritual meaning, so Tiffany and I were able to talk about them. One of my favorite sculptures of the whole thing was one of the last ones, which was an incredible sculpture of the Metamorphoses. Then we walked around the park for a little while and Tiffany and I got to talk a lot about our faith and Bible studies and what we do at school. She shared a little bit of her story with me as well, and it was really cool to hear all about that.
After that we continued on to some of the best piazzas in Rome. We saw the Piazza Popolo, which was this huge tower with a lot of detail. Then I got to go try this special iced coffee drink, caffe freddo, that I heard was highly recommended. We stopped at a few stores then to do a little souvenir shopping. Then we continued on to the Piazza Navona. This piazza was incredible because there was this huge fountain with like four spouts and statues. There were so many people in the area with cute little stands, people painting and making things, and some just hanging out.
Next we headed over to the Campo de' Fiori, which is a big square in the city. In the morning they have little markets, but we missed it since it was in the evening. Then we walked over to see the Theater of Pompey. We walked around and around to try to find the steps to see where Caesar was killed. There were a lot of ruins from where the theater and his house used to be located. There were also all these crazy cats running around. We finally found what we think were the assassination steps. Then we walked for a little while using our map skills and went into Trastevere to try to find the pizza place where we wanted to eat.
We finally found it, sat down, and spent a little while trying to figure out what we were going to eat. We split three pizzas that were really good. One had some pesto and tomatoes, another was a white pizza with some chili powder so it had a spicy kick, and the last one had chicken and some flowers on it. We wanted to make sure we tried some different, interesting types!
Finally, we
wanted to head down to the river because we heard that there is a big river festival at night. It was SO gorgeous! The bridges and streets were light and it reflected beautifully on the water. Then we walked up and down the river, and it was like a flea market. Alice was acting like crazy and making me laugh so hard. I just love her! There were a bunch of cute little food, snack places, and then a bunch of jewelry and clothing stands. I wanted to get some souvenirs but did not find anything that really caught my eye. I did want to buy a bracelet that went around my arm, but just could not seem to find the right one. After a little while of shopping we decided we should head back. We started walking for a little while and were going to try to see Circus Maximus from the outside just to say we saw it and then get on the metro. We stopped and asked a festival worker where we were at on the map so we had a point of reference. Let me tell you, that was a mistake. After a little while of walking we realized we had no idea where we were. We ran into another couple who was lost, and then we all finally found a woman from Rome. She helped all of us, but informed us that the metro had just closed!! We were all shocked, a little upset, and nervous. She told us we were technically off of our map, so we knew it would take an extremely long time to get back to the hotel. We decided to try to go wait for a bus, but after about 10 minutes, two of the girls started freaking out. They just wanted to take a taxi and get back. I really did not want to take a taxi because A) I do not trust the people there...it could totally be a fake taxi or just some creep or someone trying to rip us off and B) I figured it would be super expensive because it's Rome and it was a long distance. I said we should walk and most of the girls were okay with it, so we started off. It was a little bit creepy because it was around midnight and it was dark and a little deserted. I just kept thinking about Psalm 23. Midway through I leaned to Tiffany and asked if she knew it, and she laughed and was like, "That is all that keeps playing through my head." We had a little bit of difficult time with Alice though because she kept falling behind. Tiffany and I walked fast together, and the other two girls were way behind, so Alice kept falling in the middle and we did not think that was safe. Tiffany and I kept trying to encourage them, I kept following the map, and I just kept praying hard!!! Finally we turned onto the right street that meant we only had like ten minutes, which was SO exciting. But just when we were getting close, the other two girls decided to take a taxi. We could not believe they were doing it because we were so close and I was still way to spooked by them. The three of us just kept walking and decided to treat ourselves to gelato since it was on the way back and Alice was not doing too well. We had walked over two hours, so when we got back a little after 2, it felt rather rewarding that we had just figured that out and done it all on our own! Phew!!! What an exhausting but wonderful day! :)
